The Jatropha Information Group
We at JIG think we are in a world of hurt, we the whole world is now caught between a rock and a very hard place... we are between the rock of peak oil, and the hard place of global warming.
The world as we know it... is fast running out of time, to fix both of these problems one is very near term and is terminal... the second is further out on the horizon but just as if not more deadly to our way of life.
We are fast running out of petroleum, and fast over heating to the point of massive not just human, but all life extinction.
We think there is an out ... a good solution for us, and it is based totally on the small scale local development of Jatropha as a zero emission substitute for coal and petroleum fuel.
The world does not have much time to get this right, and worst yet we probably only one good shot, humanity as we know it, our life style as we come to appreciate it, can and will come to abrupt end, if we do not act. ... JIG believes that best shot for renewable fuels and jatropha especially...
The best solution to both problems is Jatropha planted and grown in millions of villages all across the tropical world...
Our Goal 300 million ha of planted Jatropha in Our objectives 3 million ha planted Jatropha 100 poorest countries all focused at the local village in small family plots, we believe this will help will give the world the time it needs to develop a permit solution to or energy hungry economic systems and and make them more efficient as well as, delivering critical buffer to develop the new Green and sustainable energy systems the world will require to mitigate Global Warming.
Our organization has a unique focus upon the promotion, and collection & dissemination of key information that will aid in the development of a viable Jatropha-biodiesel industry... at the local village and simultaneously create on a massive global scale, interconnected, communicative and with collaboration intensive village networks using - education and WWW wifi and wimax technology.
On a massive scale in numbers of plots, yes but not in massive in Plantation size rather we plan to advocate the smaller is better, more sustainable alternative. Jatropha and all of the attendant benefits we feel empowers to the local level...in their efforts to a sustainable livable environment, and ultimately energy and food independence.
Our focus is the small community level... we desire diversity of locations and decentralization of energy generation, independence, and sustainability is our goal.
Energy "generation" is a matter of national security and as the volatile, price caused mostly by Peak Oil paradigms cause deleterious affects on world supply with severe impacts most developing countries struggling with heavy oil import costs.
Energy Independence
Introducing Jatropha development at the local level can go a long way in achieving greater energy independence, not just for the village, but the entire country with many benefits globally as well .
First, through the development of Jatropha-biodiesel as a fuel. Then secondarily, using the waste cake from fuel production as a good low and "no net carbon emission" fuel.
Jatropha development has become one of ‘when’ rather than ‘if,’ and, now on a near daily basis, a Jatropha-biodiesel is being launched somewhere in the developing world.
Sustainable Development
Developing a dedicated energy crops that are cost-effective, easy to sustain and can produce economic yields. Certainly is a laudable goal for any organization.
Such energy crop that produces Jatropha-biodiesel and holds particular promise for sustainable development and helps the environment in three specific and measurable ways. First through abortion of co2, Second as a low emission fuel, no sulfur, and half the carbon, and finally the waste of fuel production can be used a viable coal substitute.
Poverty Alleviation
Governments has shown a major interest in Jatropha, and alongside other developing alternatives, a number of international groups are now sharing this same environmental and energy independence interest.
The bottom line is :
Jatropha is a valuable multi-purpose crop that can alleviate soil degradation, desertification and deforestation, which can produce Jatropha-biodiesel to replace petrol-diesel, and climatic protection, and hence deserves specific attention.
That is what we want to do...
This is how we plan to do it ...
Education, leveraged with Web 2.0 technology... all of it funded by a 501.c3 Carbon trust ... by selling +7 carbon offsets marketed to the rich and powerful nations and personalities of interest.
Why Jatropha?
JIG local community system must be regarded as one of the best methods for the development of Jatropha-biodiesel. We concentrate on education and technology to bring prosperity to the villages, as well as, energy & economic independence, through energy cost saving and new economic development and new revenues.
Jatropha's robust hardiness and stress handling ability it is as ideal plant for Jatropha-biodiesel products. This makes it the perfect vehicle for economic development in small rural settings.
Low cost seeds – 10 P per kilo
High oil content – almost 30% oil
Small gestation period – just six months
Growth on good and degraded soil – ideal for reforestation and erosion control...
Growth in low and high rainfall areas – very tolerant to environmental extremes...all these things help make it Ideal for the small and rural setting devoid of major resources and funds.
Low cost renewable energy that can Break the cycle of poverty…
We think large industrial systems are not the answer, its is much more sustainable and environmentally friendly for the local community to produce then consume what they produce, sell the excess... but job 1 is to take care of their needs first. The idea is to live with less intensive use of resources, yet to have a better. more fulfilling and sustainable life.
Smaller systems are easier and cheaper to manage with automation of web 2.0 technology. One can achieve the orders of magnitude for educated people, who can find and see new efficiencies, and opportunities in sustainable living. Web 2.0 technologies have revolutionized the franchise.
Using Web 2.0 technologies to educate and coop the village to our way of thinking and sustainable development. As seen in commercial franchises if rual villages have access to web based education and are trained and supported properly.
Production performance and objective achievement is much more manageable, traceable and even track able using the latest WEB technologies.
Which here to fore, that was not the case, however - now, JIG has systems in development that can do just exactly that. We can track and trace each tree, each plot each ha and even each investor too.
Why is that important? so we can sell the "insured and verifiable" carbon offsets generated to remote investors who can at anytime check on their investment performance. The network that delivers the education and support also delivers transparency and accuracy to the offset investment which in turn will lead to sell of more offset generated by the village energy development efforts.
One major key to this success, is to have the villages to produce then consume most if not all of what they produce, locally... Offsets can be sold abroad but the enrgy says home, the sustainability is increased and energy independence is archived. Which in turn, lowers cost and keeps the resource under control and the environment clean healthy and sustainable.
This automation and self consumption system cuts out all the middle men,and attendant cost. Like additional brokerage cost, distributional costs and as a bonus automation severely limits corruption, it will only be found at the village, where it will be small and quickly found out. Plus, automation and data will make it much easer for immediate and swift justice if required.
If there is corruption it is visible and local and small, tractable and traceable... automated systems will not allow for much corruption, with all its checks and balances ,
Automation encourages transparency and the web will allow for global access... so any one can check on any one... anytime for accuracy.
One can be assured, as soon as data, does not agree with the program, the automated system will set off alarms, notifying administrators of irregularities and problems ... and the culprit can easily be identified by the system. and with access to WWW technology bad people can be publicly ostracized.
JIG feels this would be much harder in massive plantations both to hard to develop and much to costly to operate and maintain maintain.
Big money attracts big thieves and if there is one thing for sure there are big thieves and corruption in all poor countries.
So we at JIG think we will plan to and develop for systems that guard, identify, and rectify the corruption we encounter. Much better to plan for and mitigate than just try to wish it away.
As Proof:
At the community level, farmers that produce this energy crops can grow their incomes and grow their own supply of affordable and reliable clean and green energy.
At the national level, producing more Jatropha-biodiesel will generate new industries, new technologies, new jobs and new markets.
At the same time, producing more Jatropha-diesel will save in energy costs and allow developing countries to put more of their resources into vital and critically needed infrastructure and other services.
The high cost and inaccessibility of fossil fuels, brought on by the specter of Peak oil" and the inevitable global warming issues... will leaves approximately 3 billion people worldwide in an awful fix... Crop yields are projected to fall by 20 % because of global warming; as yields fall, and demand rises, all will become more dependent on expensive food imports no reliable energy sources, with out electrical power... economies will collapse and without basic food and shelter, heat, or even light the end will come very soon.
This is the first crisis to hit all of the world the same way at the same time , out comes will be completely different... as the rich fight over the resources, the poor will simply starve ...maybe as much as 3 billion will die.Ethically all of us have to take a stand, the good in us will dictate we make a commitment... to make renewable energy available and affordable to all…to ensure that the poorest countries in the world are not forced to choose between feeding their people and fueling their economies.
Our mission is to help build development and promotion of Jatropha. Providing the best unvarnished truth to all... information not readily available any where else... open and free to all... for charging for this is like charging for a oar on a life boat. It is just not ethical in our view.
Our objective is to freely give all the information we can ... about buying the seeds, seedling contacts for brokering a oil & waste cake-., and
Education to all on environmentally sustainable energy, the production and refining technology to make Jatropha-biodiesel sustainable and make Jatropha development in small villages in numerous plots interconnected with web technology, all paid for with investments on carbon offsets, our tool for the world poor and the center of new Renaissance of community development.

Yesterday we had our 2nd meeting and the highlight was
the DOE IRR re Bio-diesel which was released probably
to the public for comment, deadline is NLT 17 May 07.
In the IRR one could find required technical
specifications for the standard/quality of bio-diesel
to be authorized by the government. Significant
findings were placed on the table and pointed
out that the specs provided would only qualify coconut
as the only source for bio-diesel. Pls refer on the
doc sent by jun re his findings.
Apparently, there seems to be a conscious effort in
undermining the government's bio-fuel program
specifically on the other alternative sources. If in
case the IRR be passed three things will happen: 1.
Coconut as single source for bio-diesel, 2. Monopoly
by XXXXXXXX on the production, 3. Nationwide Jatropha
efforts would be shutdown.
Mentioned on the letter of Jun to DOE are the cons if
we exclusively use coconut as a source for bio-diesel,
which he have been emphasizing since day 1.
While trying to stop the IRR from being subsequently
implemented by the DOE, the group
should still have to pursue the main task of planning
for the Jatropha project regardless of the issue.
Data were shared by each member to come up with some
baselines and working figures. Targets as well as new
objectives were set.
We hope that the group be officially be recognized
anytime soon sir.
Great site. Hope we can generate more interests thru this forum
